Heidelberg enchants and has enchanted many people as is well known, among those people were many artists, too. The painting of Carl Phillip Fohr provides us anew a good proof for that. This painter, born in 1795 in Heidelberg, was in the period of Romantic a renowned landscape painter. So, he did not miss to capture his beloved hometown in his artworks.
His painting “Schloß und Stadt von Osten” (= Castle and City from East) shows the observer Heidelberg city around 1815. Here in the foreground you can see a lot of landscape, in the distance you can see the soaring towers of the Heidelberg Castle, above him a grey sky. This is romanticism to the core. Isn’t it a dreamlike view?
