Jean Paul about Heidelberg

Jean Paul, actually Johann Paul Friedrich Richter (1763-1825) was a German writer who can come under the periods of classic literature and the period of Romantic.

When Jean Paul visited Heidelberg he got a royal treatment there. He could not stop being astonished. He was taken with the companionable and open-minded way of the Heidelberg people. Thus, he spoke highly of Heidelberg and its folk:

“Ich habe hier Stunden erlebt, wie ich sie unter dem schönsten Himmel meines Lebens gefunden, besonders die Wasserfahrt, das Studentenvivat, und gestrige Gesänge (…) Der gesellige Ton ist hier Leichtigkeit, Anstand und Freude; vier angetrunkene Punschbowlen bei Voß und 100 ausgetrunkene Weinflaschen auf dem Schiff ließen doch diesen Ton bestehen.”
